As 2024 comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on a year filled with growth, challenges, and meaningful connections. It’s been a privilege to continue advocating for the sexual health and well-being of older adults, particularly those living in care facilities. This year’s journey has taken me far and wide—from Massachusetts to Perth, Australia—through presentations, interviews, and the publication of academic work. One personal milestone I’m especially proud of is becoming a certified AASECT sexuality educator.
What has truly stood out, though, are the people I’ve met along the way. Each conversation has been a reminder of the shared passion so many of us have for improving the sexual health and autonomy of older adults. It’s inspiring to witness the growing commitment to ensuring that older adults, including those with cognitive impairments, can experience meaningful connection and intimacy.
My mission has always been to educate and empower professionals working with older adults, equipping them with the tools and knowledge to support the sexual health of those in their care. While progress has been made, significant challenges persist—especially the widespread misconception that sexuality and aging are mutually exclusive.
Many are surprised to learn that intimacy remains important to older adults. This disbelief makes me reflect on our collective experience of isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic and how it affected our mental health. Older adults face similar isolation every day, and just like anyone else, they thrive when they experience connection, closeness, and touch.
Sadly, older adults in care facilities often have their ability to express these needs restricted—not because it’s harmful but because it makes others uncomfortable. We need to confront this discomfort and ask ourselves why societal unease should dictate the fundamental rights and well-being of older adults.
As I look back on this year, I feel deeply grateful for everyone who is contributing to this vital work. To those who advocate for the sexual freedom and health of older adults: thank you. Your efforts are making a real difference, and together, we are creating the momentum for meaningful change.
Looking ahead to 2025, I’m filled with hope. There’s so much more to do, but I believe we can continue to break down barriers, challenge outdated perceptions, and create a world where the sexual health and autonomy of older adults are respected and celebrated. Let’s keep the momentum going!
