Training

Basic Training: Stepping Stones

Basic training for nursing staff  involves basic knowledge of sexuality and aging and communication skills. These communication skills are necessary to discuss sexuality issues with residents and family members in a respectful yet knowledgeable way. 

Time investment: This training will be 1.5 hours and have both practical and theoretical aspects.

Global learning objectives:

  • Increase knowledge on sexuality and aging.
  • Understanding effects of bias in relation to sexuality.
  • Able to confidently initiate conversation with residents in relation to sexuality.

Advanced Training: Deep Dive

A training that involves extensive knowledge of sexuality and aging, as well as an understanding of how dementia, Parkinson’s, or stroke can influence sexuality. Communication skills will also be discussed in depth, which is necessary to discuss sexuality issues with residents and family members in a respectful yet knowledgeable way. In addition, subjects such as consent and dementia, as well as sexuality in older LGBTQIA+ adults, will be discussed, in relation to problem solving skills

This training will be 3 hours and have both practical and theoretical aspects.

Global learning objectives:

  • Increase knowledge on sexuality and aging and cognition.
  • Understanding effects of bias in relation to sexuality.
  • Distinguish between ‘normal’ sexuality vs. ‘problematic’ sexuality.
  • Able to confidently initiate diverse types of conversations with residents in relation to sexuality.

Policy & Guidelines

Besides training options, there are also options for organizations (administrators or management) to develop guidelines and policies around sexuality. This could entail:

  • Support with the development of guidelines and policies.
  • Support on how to implement sexuality training in your organization.
  • Support the development of information pamphlets or website content for residents and family members.

Customized Presentations

Besides these training and organizational support, there are introductory 1- hour sexuality presentations for residents and families, presentations for care staff, or presentations for administrators/directors. These presentations can also be on dementia in general, the intersection of sexuality and dementia, or sexuality, dementia, and consent, in addition to sexuality and LGBTQIA+ older adults.
